Yoga Nidra

What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a “sleep-like” state which has a deeply relaxing effect on the body, mind and soul. It is said to be one of the most profound experiences of relaxation where you still retain consciousness. Unlike normal sleep, where you may lose the sense of self, in Yoga Nidra there remains a sharp, inward lucidity.

In Yoga, it is often stated that Savasana, known to many as the Yoga relaxation posture at the end of class, is the most difficult asana (posture) to master of all Yoga postures. This is perhaps the result of modern life, where everyone is very busy being busy and we often equate relaxation or “not doing” as somehow lazy or unproductive but as the beautiful quote from Lao Tzu states:

“By letting go, it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try, the world is beyond the winning.” — Lao Tzu

Benefits of Yoga Nidra

There are numerous benefits of Yoga Nidra with the obvious benefit being a deep feeling of relaxation and “all is well” with the world as we enter another state of consciousness. This relaxation occurs on the physical, mental and emotional level of our being. As we let go, consciously and naturally, we are reconnected to our true sense of Self – where nothing is needed, where life flows effortlessly and we become aware that all is happening of its own accord. For example: the body knows how to take care of itself and we observe how the breathing naturally falls into rhythm – all without our “doing”. As a result stress levels are reduced and we trust more in the natural unfolding of life.

Scientific experiments conducted with a Yogi (Swami) found that he was able to enter various states of consciousness at will. This was evidenced by remarkable changes in the electrical activity of his brain. In addition, despite being completely relaxed in Yoga Nidra in a delta wave sleep, he was able to recall all events precisely.
